standards
ISO 14001:2004: this is an international management standard that allows companies to implement and be externally certified for registration. many companies see the accrediation to ISO14001:2004 crucial to demonstrating in tendering processes their environmental credientials. ISO14001:2004 provides a framework for a holistic, strategic approach to the company's environmental policy, plans and actions.
BS8901:2009: standards are moving away from just quality and environmental, sustainability is the way forward. this standard introduces a sustainable managment system for industry. the standard has been produced for the events industry to assist this industrial sector to operate in a sustainable manner and take into account of not only environmental issues by social and economic concerns. it also insists on developing a strong dialogue with all stakehlders and consider the supply chain. the standard shares common management system principles and processes with ISO 9001 Quality and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standards. BS8901:2009 standard is seen to play an important role as all the major players in the London 2012 Olympics are seeking to work with companies who are able to demonstrate an awareness of sustaiinable issues and by implementing BS8901 these companies are getting a head start.
EMAS: this is the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme. it is a voluntary initiaitive and allows companies to improve their environmental performance. companies who adopt EMAS are required to produce a public environmental statement that provides information on their environmental performance.
BS8555:2003: a phased implementation of an EMS. it is a good way of a company working towards ISO 14001:2004 certification or EMAS. this phased approach allows companies who do not have the resource to implement an EMS gradually.
sustainability: no specific standard sets out 'sustainability', but focus is on developing working practices that works towards providing for the needs of the world's current population without damaging the ability of future generations. issues such as climate change, energy and waste are just a few of the key areas. sustainability looks at all the issues of environmental impact; social impact and economical issues.
